- Palm Springs International Film Awards will hold its 2027 gala on January 7 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the Palm Springs Film Festival running January 7-18.
- La Bola Negra will receive the International Star Award; Spain’s Oscar submission won Cannes’ top prize, drew a 20-minute ovation and earned TIFF’s People’s Choice award, with directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi and star Penélope Cruz expected to attend.
- Martin McDonagh will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award for Searchlight Pictures’ Wild Horse Nine, which premiered at Venice and stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi and Parker Posey.
- Inde Navarrette will receive the Rising Star Award for her performance in Curry Barker’s Obsession, which broke box-office records and reached $525.4 million globally; she recently hosted Saturday Night Live.
- The Invite will receive the Vanguard Award for director-star Olivia Wilde and co-stars Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton; after premiering at Sundance, it became one of the year’s top-grossing limited debuts and grossed $61.2 million domestically and overseas.
- Sentimental Value, last year’s International Star recipient, went on to win the International Feature Film Oscar with its entire main cast nominated, while earlier Vanguard recipients Hamnet, Green Book and The Shape of Water later won Best Picture.
Why it matters: The four honorees gain named awards at the January 7 ceremony, with the festival continuing through January 18. The slate spans La Bola Negra’s 20-minute Cannes ovation and TIFF People’s Choice win, Martin McDonagh’s directing honor, Inde Navarrette’s $525.4 million breakout and The Invite’s $61.2 million indie gross.
