- Bitcoin closed at $81,159 on Coinbase Sunday, above its 50-week moving average of $78,788 — the first weekly close above the indicator since November 9, 2025.
- Galaxy Research's Alex Thorn wrote in August that in four of five completed bear markets, the first weekly close above the 50-week MA definitively marked the bottom.
- Collective Shift founder Ben Simpson called a close above the moving average "the last thing I need to see before I call this a bull market," noting Bitcoin gained 700%–900% after similar breaks in 2017, 2020, and 2023.
- Bitget chief analyst Ryan Lee said one weekly close is insufficient to confirm a cycle bottom, citing historical "failed reclaims in previous cycles, particularly when the macro environment remained difficult."
- Galaxy separately found that two of 13 weekly crossings back above the 50-week MA were followed by a lower low — both during the 2021–2022 bear market.
- Crypto trader Craig Cobb said he is instead watching $83,000 and a red-to-green quarterly candle transition — a setup he says produced new all-time highs in 11 of 15 historical instances.
Why it matters: Whether Bitcoin can hold above the 50-week moving average over the coming weeks distinguishes a confirmed cycle bottom from another false reclaim — Galaxy's own data shows two of 13 such crossings preceded a lower low, both in 2021–2022. Lee also flagged $57,000 July lows and leverage clearouts as a stronger structural backdrop than prior failed attempts.
