- National Environment Agency commissioned three studies on Oct 27 covering international regulations and environmental standards for nuclear facilities, international nuclear safety standards and requirements, and the potential environmental implications of a nuclear power plant, ahead of the first phase of the IAEA's Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review in 2027.
- Enconet Consulting was appointed alongside AtkinsRealis Singapore and Environmental Resources Management (S) to carry out the three studies commissioned by the agency.
- Energy Market Authority named a 12-member consultant panel spanning technical and economic issues such as nuclear safety and security, the legal and regulatory framework, and organisational matters including procurement and management systems, with a second panel of technical advisers to be appointed by end-2026.
- Tan See Leng said Singapore and the Philippines have agreed to explore nuclear energy collaborations, following Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr signalling willingness to cooperate during a visit to the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute.
- Singapore will use its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to deepen regional collaboration and discourse, including through the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy and Nuclear Energy Cooperation Sub-Sector Network.
- NEA reiterated that the government has not made a decision on deploying nuclear energy in Singapore, with Tan describing a nuclear power programme as a "complex endeavour" requiring work on workforce, financing, legislation, regulation and industry development.
- International Atomic Energy Agency is working with Singapore and regional partners on coordination and preparedness for nuclear emergencies, and Tan said building expertise early would let the country independently assess advanced nuclear energy technologies.
Why it matters: With no deployment decision made, Singapore is already contracting three studies, a 12-consultant panel and a second technical panel due by end-2026. That gives the IAEA a defined preparedness baseline for the 2027 review and gives partners such as the Philippines a concrete entry point into nuclear cooperation.
