- Mercedes-Benz redesigned its smallest SUV, the electric GLA, which CEO Ola Källenius called "the most expressive GLA ever" and which will arrive in electric and hybrid variants in H2 2027
- The 2028 GLA EV rides on Mercedes' MMA platform with a 2.4" longer wheelbase (now 109.8"), gaining up to 1.5" of rear legroom and 0.9" of headroom from a streamlined roof and panoramic glass
- The interior debuts Mercedes' floating MBUX Superscreen spanning the dashboard — a 10.25" driver display flanked by dual 14" screens — and is among the first vehicles to integrate Google Cloud's new Automotive AI Agent with Google Maps for conversational navigation and charging-station lookup
- The GLA EV launches in 268-hp 250+ and AWD 349-hp 350 4MATIC trims, both drawing from an 85 kWh battery for up to 408 miles of WLTP range
- 800-volt charging architecture lets the GLA add 267 miles of range in roughly 10 minutes at up to 320 kW DC fast charging
- The 2028 GLA EV is expected to start around $45,000 in the US with an EPA-estimated range of about 350 miles
Why it matters: The 408-mile WLTP range and 267-mile-in-10-minutes charging put the GLA in the top tier of compact premium EVs on paper, while the ~$45K starting price keeps it aimed at mainstream premium buyers rather than luxury-only territory. Mercedes baking Google Cloud's Automotive AI Agent into its navigation — rather than building its own conversational assistant — shows legacy automakers outsourcing in-vehicle AI to hyperscalers instead of competing with them head-on.
