- Adam Mosseri said on the Colin and Samir podcast that anxiety, frustration and anger about AI will worsen over the next couple of years, with some concerns founded and others unfounded and the strain extending beyond the industry.
- Instagram began requiring AI accounts to label themselves, following the introduction of labels earlier this year and an August crackdown on AI-generated profiles.
- Mosseri said earlier this month that Instagram was actively working out what to do about AI fakes and that banning AI content was not practical, even as misleading celebrity deepfakes remain an issue.
- Mosseri said Instagram does not rank AI creators differently, while separately suggesting AI content probably would not rank as well as non-AI content; he said the label “AI slop” is used too liberally.
- Mosseri said the underlying concern is a fear of being left behind, spanning ownership of creators’ work, models training on that work, safety, and job displacement for creators, engineers and mathematicians.
Why it matters: For creators, engineers and mathematicians, Instagram’s August crackdown and new labeling requirement make disclosure the immediate material issue: AI accounts must identify themselves, while Mosseri says a ban remains impractical and celebrity deepfakes are unresolved. The platform is marking AI content without having resolved deceptive content.
