- Prince William said 2026 was the first summer he had felt “generally worried” about the scale of UK wildfires and warned that another season without adequate preparation would be a “terrifying prospect.”
- National Fire Chiefs Council recorded an all-time high of 1,350 significant wildfires across England and Wales, more than 300 above 2025 and more than 1,000 above 2024.
- SWFRS declared a major incident while responding to 14 wildfires simultaneously in August, including the Treherbert mountain fire, and received support from 22 other UK fire services.
- Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment deployed 200 soldiers to dig firebreaks and help supply the 2.1 million litres of water used against the flames.
- UK government announced that the RAF's Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft would be equipped to fight fires in future, while William separately said the country was lacking aerial assets.
- Valleys Kids said volunteers kept its Treherbert centre open 24 hours a day from the Saturday evening of the fire until the following Thursday, turning it into a control hub and rest point for the response.
Why it matters: SWFRS and the 22 services supporting it faced 14 simultaneous August fires, while the England and Wales significant-wildfire count hit an all-time high of 1,350. The UK government’s plan to equip Chinook and A400M aircraft for firefighting and the Welsh summit’s commitments put preparedness and aerial capacity on the agenda.
