SRP Seeks Board Approval for Marigold Energy Center

- Salt River Project plans to seek board approval in September for the Marigold Energy Center, about 45 miles south of Phoenix, to meet growing demand in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
- The Marigold Energy Center would include 400 MW of battery storage, 600 MW of solar generation, up to 675 MW of gas generation, a new substation, and four miles of 230-kV transmission lines.
- SRP will host an in-person open house July 28 in Stanfield and a virtual meeting July 29, following earlier community sessions held at Stanfield Elementary School in December and March.
- Electrical District No. 3 is evaluating a potential partnership with SRP to procure a portion of the energy generated by the Marigold Energy Center to serve its own customers with competitively priced electricity.
- In June, SRP announced an agreement with Google-backed Energy Dome for a 19-MW, 10-hour CO2-based battery system co-located at the Coronado Generating Station in St. Johns, Arizona.
- In October, SRP tapped ESS Tech to develop a 5-MW/50-MWh iron flow battery through a pilot project and storage purchase agreement.
Why it matters: SRP's 1,000 MW of new solar-plus-storage plus up to 675 MW of gas targets surging demand in Maricopa and Pinal counties, and the potential ED3 partnership shows Arizona public power utilities are exploring shared procurement to keep rates competitive.
