The Chevy Equinox EV is due for an update: Here’s what could change

- GM is developing a new dedicated EV platform internally codenamed BEV-N, with the next-gen Chevy Equinox EV expected to be its first vehicle on the platform, arriving in late 2028 or early 2029.
- Chevy Equinox EV sales are down 41% in the first half of 2026 versus the same period last year, per Cox Automotive data, after the $7,500 federal tax credit expired in September 2025.
- The Equinox EV slipped from being the top non-Tesla EV in the US to fifth place overall, falling behind the updated Toyota bZ and Hyundai IONIQ 5.
- The new BEV-N platform is expected to improve range beyond the current 319 miles (EPA, FWD), enable faster charging speeds, and support an advanced software stack with new safety and convenience features.
- GM confirmed the Cadillac Escalade IQ will be its first vehicle with eyes-off self-driving on highways starting in 2028, with a planned test fleet of over 200 self-driving and supervised vehicles.
- In the interim, 2027 Chevy Equinox EVs will be updated with an NACS charge port while awaiting the new platform.
Why it matters: GM's pivot to a new BEV-N platform addresses a 41% sales decline for the Equinox EV, which lost its $7,500 tax credit edge last September and now sits fifth among EVs. By 2028-2029, the platform must deliver range and charging gains to compete with refreshed Toyota bZ and Hyundai IONIQ 5 models.
