- ID. Polo won the overall “German Car of the Year 2027” after taking the entry-level class for models priced up to €25,000; the winning car starts at €24,995 ($28,000).
- Volkswagen opened ID. Polo orders with the 52-kWh battery at the end of April and added the 37-kWh version in July, offering up to 207 miles (334 km) of WLTP range.
- ID. Polo’s 37-kWh battery supports DC charging up to 90 kW and goes from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes; Life and Style versions with that battery start at €29,195 ($32,500).
- Thomas Schäfer said the award “confirms what the ID. Polo stands for” and brings electric mobility into everyday life; he also reported well over 50,000 ID. Polo orders.
- Skoda Elroq won the previous year’s award, giving Volkswagen two consecutive German Car of the Year victories with compact electric models.
- Kia PV5 won the €25,000–€40,000 compact class, Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric took the €40,000–€70,000 premium segment, and Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 N was named German Performance Car 2027.
- Electric Urban Car Family counted nearly 150,000 orders after series production began in June, as Volkswagen sales boss Martin Sander reported a “significantly accelerated trend towards all-electric vehicles” in Germany.
Why it matters: Volkswagen gains product credibility for putting a B-segment EV at €24,995, backed by well over 50,000 Polo orders and nearly 150,000 orders for its Electric Urban Car Family. Its second straight compact-EV win, following the Skoda Elroq, also aligns with sales chief Martin Sander’s reported acceleration toward all-electric vehicles in Germany.
