- Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan signed a trilateral defence pact in Mecca on 7 August 2026, aimed at deterring aggression in the region.
- The pact includes a binding mutual defence clause stating that "any armed attack against any one of the three States shall be regarded as an attack against them all."
Why it matters: The mutual defence language converts three loose bilateral security relationships into a single collective security commitment — an attack on any one member now legally obligates the other two to respond. By formalising this in Mecca, the signatories have replaced ad hoc coordination with a treaty-level deterrence guarantee.
