- Netflix and Bengali streamer Hoichoi announced a partnership in Mumbai on Thursday under which every Hoichoi series launched over the next two years will get Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu-language versions streaming exclusively on Netflix, arriving simultaneously with their Bengali debut.
- Hoichoi's first title under the deal is horror series "The Cursed Temple of Kauriburi," rooted in folklore and bowing Nov. 6 with Jeetu Kamal, Solanki Roy, and Paoli Dam in the leads.
- Netflix will also carry 14 existing Hoichoi series, including "Madam Inspector," "Sampurna," "Lajja," "Eken Sirji," "The Curse of Parnashavari," "Bloodlines," and "Mahanagar," spanning crime thrillers, detective mysteries, folklore horror, courtroom drama, and romance.
- Hoichoi Studios and Netflix will co-produce new original series adapting selected Hoichoi stories, with each project bringing in new creative voices; further details are yet to be revealed.
- The pact follows Netflix's recent licensing deals with TF1 in France and Globo in Brazil, part of the streamer's wider effort to supplement originals with licensed programming from outside producers.
- Hoichoi launched in 2017 under SVF's new media arm, is run by co-founder Vishnu Mohta, hosts more than 2,000 hours of programming including over 100 original series and films, and claims to reach more than 250 million Bengalis worldwide.
Why it matters: Hoichoi, a niche Bengali platform claiming a 250-million-strong diaspora reach, gains guaranteed distribution into India's three largest streaming-language markets via Netflix — a structural lift it could not achieve alone. The pact also fits a pattern: in the past month alone Netflix has locked exclusive content from TF1 in France and Globo in Brazil, signaling that licensing deals with major regional players are now central to its global growth strategy, not a supplement to originals.
