Ancient Egyptians May Have Built Dam Near Red Pyramid

- Xavier Landreau at Paleotechnic in France and colleagues used satellite imagery, historical maps, topographical modelling and watershed analysis to examine two structures 40m from the Red Pyramid, each measuring 600–700m long, 15–30m wide and 6–7m tall and separated by about 200m.
- The Red Pyramid, built during Snefru's 4th-dynasty reign (~2613–2589 BC) as his second major tomb, is considered the first "true" pyramid with smooth slopes on all sides, sitting across the Wadi Dahshur valley where the structures were first identified in 1843 and assumed to be construction ramps since 1947.
- A "zigzagging" feature at the centre of the structures suggests they may be the earliest known duckbill weir-style dam, with Landreau noting they were likely broad embankments of earth, marl, rubble and stone, not modern concrete dams.
- Sayed Hemeda at Cairo University said the two-stage dam system tamed flash floods, stored millions of gallons of water and redirected flow directly to the construction site—suggesting water served as a primary power source and transport mechanism for multi-tonne limestone blocks.
- The new analysis suggests Snefru's engineers may have learned from the earlier Sadd el-Kafara dam further north, which collapsed after a large flood, with the new dam apparently engineered to withstand powerful Nile flooding.
- Hesham Hussein at Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the research, if confirmed through excavation, could "significantly transform" understanding of 4th-dynasty construction logistics.
