- XPeng activated what it calls the world's first automated production line for advanced humanoid robots at its Guangzhou facility, with more than 80% of core processes automated, and its IRON robot walked off the line under its own power.
- IRON has 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 per hand, wrapped in a flexible lattice skin, and runs on three of XPeng's in-house Turing AI chips delivering up to 2,250 TOPS — enough, XPeng claims, to operate without teleoperation.
- XPeng is targeting IRON mass production by end of 2026, with the first robots going into its own stores and campuses; sales and deliveries in China and abroad are not scheduled until 2027.
- XPeng's robotics arm raised over $900 million at a $6.3 billion valuation — the largest single private round in China's embodied AI sector — led by IDG Capital with Tencent and Alibaba participating, and the company wants to scale beyond 1,000 IRON units a month toward a million a year by 2030.
- Tesla is the unspoken benchmark: Elon Musk predicted roughly 10,000 Optimus robots in 2026, but in January admitted none were doing useful work, with Optimus production at Fremont only meant to start now at "quite slow" output and the V3 reveal still slipping.
Why it matters: XPeng has crossed the threshold from humanoid robot demo to actual automated manufacturing — something Tesla's Optimus program has not yet achieved — but one unit walking off a line is not volume, and XPeng has not shipped IRON to a paying customer or proven usefulness at scale. The gross-margin promise of "significantly higher" than EVs is still unproven, so the real test comes by December when IRON either performs useful work in XPeng stores or just stands there.
