- Xpeng's robotics unit raised more than $900 million at a post-money valuation of more than $6.3 billion, in a round led by IDG Capital with participation from Gaorong Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba — described as the largest single-round private financing ever recorded in China's "embodied AI" industry
- Xpeng founder He Xiaopeng and co-president Brian Gu personally invested about $100 million into the fundraising round, per the Wall Street Journal
- BYD unveiled a humanoid robot called Xiao Di, while Chery Automobile's robotics unit AiMOGA reportedly began preparing for an IPO this month
- Changan, GAC, Li Auto, SAIC, and Seres are also developing humanoid robots, rounding out a wave of Chinese automakers entering the category
- Xpeng's robot, called Iron, is built with a realistic human shape for commercial deployment; Dunne Insights CEO Michael Dunne called Xpeng the Chinese automaker most focused on autonomy and the first to commit heavily to humanoid robots
- Hyundai plans to bring Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid to its Georgia factory this year and deploy robots for parts sequencing by 2028, partnered with Google DeepMind on Atlas development
- Mobileye acquired humanoid robot startup Mentee Robotics for $900 million, and Rivian spun out Mind Robotics — both automotive players entering the same space
Why it matters: Chinese automakers bring manufacturing scale and supply chains — Dunne Insights says they "have all the hardware to get the job done" — but the open question is whether they can close the AI gap with Tesla. Xpeng's leadership putting $100M of their own money into the round signals conviction that razor-thin car profits make humanoid robotics a more promising commercial horizon than vehicles.
