- Genesis Europe MD Peter Kronschnabl told Autocar the luxury brand is "evaluating" a more affordable, mainstream EV, though nothing has been confirmed
- Genesis was initially set to sell only EVs from 2025 but now plans to launch its first hybrid later this year and its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) next year
- Hyundai Motor CEO José Muñoz said Genesis has "grown faster than any luxury marque in history" since launching its first vehicle in 2015
- The potential mass-market Genesis EV would likely share underpinnings with the Hyundai IONIQ 3, a compact electric hatch on the 400V E-GMP platform with a base UK price of £22,245 ($29,800)
- The affordable Genesis EV may draw design influence from the Mint concept, a premium electric city car Genesis unveiled in 2019
- Genesis is expected to reveal the GV90, its flagship three-row electric SUV, by the end of 2026
- Genesis entered the high-performance segment through its Magma program, set to compete with Mercedes-AMG and BMW M
- Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are also planning to expand into the mass market with more affordable EVs over the next few years
Why it matters: A mass-market Genesis EV built on the IONIQ 3's 400V platform could undercut current luxury EV pricing while letting Genesis nurture future premium buyers early — a direct competitive response to Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, which are all pursuing the same affordable-EV strategy. Kronschnabl framed the approach as "a marathon, not a sprint," signaling Genesis will pass on short-term fads like a luxury pickup truck.
