Organic Eggs Emit Twice the CO2 of Caged, Study Finds

- Dr Harriet Bartlett and Oxford University Smith School colleagues found that a fully organic free-range UK egg sector would emit 2,316,000 tCO2e versus 1,184,000 tCO2e for a fully caged system, because organic flocks require more birds to produce the same number of eggs.
- Organic free-range production scored worst across multiple environmental categories beyond climate, including water eutrophication, acidification, and land use, while also recording the highest chicken mortality rate.
- The current UK egg regime — a mix of caged, barn-housed, free-range non-organic, and free-range organic — emits an estimated 1,439,000 tCO2e, sitting between the two extremes.
- The study's data covers 2009-2010, a limitation the authors acknowledged, and does not capture pesticide toxicity, biodiversity, or other environmental factors the authors said could favor organic systems.

Why it matters: Consumers and retailers who pay premiums for organic or free-range eggs on animal-welfare grounds are unknowingly supporting a production model with significantly higher greenhouse gas emissions per unit of output than caged systems — exposing a core trade-off between animal welfare, climate impact, and land use that the UK's current mixed egg sector papers over.
