Eolian builds PJM's largest 1 GWh battery in Ohio

- Eolian is building the Flint Grid battery in Jersey Township, Licking County, Ohio — a 200 MW / 1 GWh facility capable of discharging for more than five hours, the largest battery storage project in both Ohio and the PJM grid serving 13 states and Washington, DC.
- Flint Grid sits next to New Albany's fast-growing data center and industrial corridor, where AWS already operates infrastructure and Google and Meta are constructing additional data center buildings.
- The project is the first grid-scale battery permitted by the Ohio Power Siting Board and the first large-scale battery to qualify for PJM's capacity market, accounting for more than half of the new battery capacity selected in PJM's 2027-28 capacity auction.
- Eolian committed capital to Flint Grid years before surging electricity forecasts — driven heavily by data centers — became a national concern, the company said.
- CEO Aaron Zubaty said there's "growing consternation" about how the US can rapidly scale infrastructure to meet demand, but "not nearly enough conversation about how to use existing technology to unlock the wasted capacity that already exists on the grid."
Why it matters: Co-locating next to New Albany's data center cluster lets Flint Grid help PJM use existing transmission more efficiently while longer-term upgrades and new power supplies are built. The project capturing more than half of new battery capacity in the 2027-28 auction marks batteries' first real foothold in PJM's capacity market after years of small-scale projects.
