Tesla Remote Operator Crashes Robotaxi Into Stump

- Tesla filed four new Robotaxi crash reports with NHTSA, including a May Houston incident where a remote operator drove a Model Y into a hidden tree stump at 2 mph while recovering it from a dead-end residential road — minor property damage, no injuries.
- The Houston crash is the first Tesla formally coded as "Remote (Commercial / Test)" operation out of 22 unique ADS incident reports, and the third collision caused by a remote operator intervening after the ADS got stuck.
- All three remote-intervention crashes follow the same pattern — ADS gets stuck, human takes over remotely, human crashes the car — and Tesla doesn't disclose how often remote operators intervene, so there's no way to calculate a rate.
- Waymo told Senator Ed Markey in a February 2026 letter that it "has not used remote driving or 'tele-operations' where a human performs the Dynamic Driving Task"; its remote agents only provide guidance the vehicle can accept or reject.
- Waymo's one narrow exception — a recovery tool capped at 2 mph with fixed steering angles for stuck vehicles — "has never been used outside of training," per the same letter, contrasting with Tesla's teleoperators actively steering.
- Tesla's other three reports include a Dallas crash where the Model Y drove into a metal chain at a parking lot entrance at 5 mph (a repeat of an Austin September 2025 incident), and two Austin crashes where other vehicles reversed into stopped Teslas.
- Tesla was the only ADS operator under NHTSA's Standing General Order that redacted every crash narrative as confidential business information before reversing course in May's data dump, which made these patterns legible.
Why it matters: Tesla had just three active vehicles in Houston when one needed a remote-operator rescue within a month of launch, and the operator drove it into a tree stump — every remote intervention that has appeared in a crash report ended in a collision, highlighting a structural gap between Tesla's teleoperation model (humans drive remotely) and Waymo's (humans only advise) that matters for anyone betting on Tesla's unsupervised robotaxi scaling.
