Australia's Biobanks Race to Save Kelp, Oysters, Seagrass

- Deakin University operates a "living library" biobank at its Queenscliff marine research centre, storing golden kelp in red-lit fridges that keep the algae perpetually in an early growth stage, with a separate colder fridge holding dormant samples for future restoration.
- An intense marine heatwave off Western Australia wiped out large stretches of golden kelp — a foundation species of the 8,000km Great Southern Reef — which scientists cite as the catalyst for establishing biobanks across the kelp's range.
- Deakin's team reduced purple sea urchin populations at Port Phillip Bay's Jawbone and Ricketts Point marine sanctuaries, then "planted" lab-grown kelp in 2022; a project partner recently sent photos showing some specimens now exceed 30cm and are showing reproductive signs.
- Melbourne Museum runs a cryogenic biobank storing living wildlife cells at -196°C in 2ml tubes, including ear snips from mammals and tail tips from reptiles, with potential to store embryos of threatened species.
- Dr. Kathy Overton is cultivating native flat oysters at Queenscliff — noting less than 1% of historical reefs remain — and last year successfully bred three of four trial genetic populations collected from remnant Victorian reefs.
- Marine ecologist Laney Callahan planted 300 square metres of seagrass in Coronet Bay six months ago with early positive results, and frames seagrass restoration as "a global challenge" where only a handful of projects worldwide have achieved ecologically relevant scale.
Why it matters: Port Phillip Bay's restored kelp has already reached 30cm with visible reproductive signs, and Callahan notes only a handful of seagrass projects worldwide have achieved ecologically relevant scale. With less than 1% of native flat oyster reefs remaining, biobanks offer insurance — but ecosystem-scale recovery remains unproven.
