- Uber and Pony.ai announced Thursday they will test Pony.ai's Gen-7 robotaxis in London in coming weeks, marking the Chinese AV maker's second European market after launching in Zagreb.
- Pony.ai has already launched robotaxi services in four Chinese cities and secured deals with local transportation authorities in Qatar as it pushes beyond its home market.
- Uber has struck deals with more than 30 autonomous vehicle companies globally and aims to offer AV trips in as many as 15 cities by the end of 2026, roughly split between U.S. and international markets.
- Uber and Pony.ai first partnered in May 2025 in the Middle East, then committed to deploying 2,000 robotaxis across Europe starting with Zagreb, where an August 2026 launch added a third partner — Verne, a startup set up by Rimac Group founder Mate Rimac.
- In the Zagreb model, Pony.ai supplies the autonomous driving system and the Arcfox Alpha T5 robotaxi (developed with Chinese automaker BAIC), Verne owns and operates the fleet, and Uber provides its ride-hailing network; the London service will follow the same structure, though the fleet owner has not been named.
- Uber is not relying solely on Pony.ai in London — it also partnered with and invested in British self-driving startup Wayve, which raised $1.2 billion in February 2026 from Microsoft, Nvidia, and Uber, with an additional $300 million from Uber contingent on London deployment.
Why it matters: Uber is hedging across 30+ AV partnerships rather than backing one technology stack, running Pony.ai and Wayve programs simultaneously in London while pursuing similar multi-partner plays in Dubai with Baidu and WeRide. For London riders, that could mean competing robotaxi brands under one app sooner than expected; for Pony.ai, it's a second European foothold after Zagreb and validation of its Gen-7 platform outside China.
