- Meta is rolling out its Meta AI chatbot within Threads' DMs globally starting Monday, enabling users to chat privately with the assistant for the first time on the platform
- Threads users in select markets previously could only interact with Meta AI in public posts (similar to Grok on X); the DM integration adds private, one-on-one conversations
- Meta is positioning the integration to keep users inside its ecosystem and discourage them from using third-party assistants like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Gemini
- Threads users can now share posts, images, links, and videos directly with Meta AI and ask follow-up questions to dive deeper into topics
- Meta AI is already available within DMs on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—making Threads the last of Meta's major platforms to receive private AI access
- Meta is still testing Meta AI in Threads' public feeds in a handful of global markets and will expand based on feedback; users can mute @meta.ai or mark replies as 'Not interested'
Why it matters: Threads was the last major Meta-owned platform without private Meta AI access, and users previously had to leave the app for rivals like ChatGPT or Gemini. By completing the cross-platform DM rollout across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and now Threads, Meta reduces the friction of staying inside its own assistant.
