Why Britain is breathing the world’s wildfire smoke

- University of Edinburgh and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology researchers found wildfires account for about 10% of the UK's particle pollution, with smoke reaching Britain from sources thousands of miles away.
- Dr Mark Parrington of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service said recent south-western European wildfires pushed PM2.5 concentrations in Bordeaux and Madrid "well above" air quality guidelines, with the cities downwind of Gironde and Ávila fires.
- Researcher Damaris Tan built a global computer simulation showing it took over three months for the effects of 2018 wildfires to become negligible to 2019 UK concentrations, warning time lags of months are possible depending on fire location and meteorology.
- Russia contributed nearly half of UK wildfire pollution in 2019, with Tan noting the UK received smoke from both eastward winds and westward global circulation patterns.
- Canadian wildfires dominated 2023 and their contribution to UK pollution in 2024 and 2025 was "likely more than double that of most years prior to 2023," Tan said.
- Wildfire chemicals react with existing UK air pollution to produce additional harmful particles, potentially doubling the wildfire-derived particulate matter people breathe, according to the study.
- Prof Mathew Heal said the UK may need to "over-deliver" on emission reductions to meet legal particle pollution targets, while Dr Eiko Nemitz said cutting emissions from traffic, heating, industry, and agriculture could limit the secondary pollution component "directly within UK policymakers' control."
Why it matters: UK researchers concluded Britain may need to exceed planned emission cuts to hit legal particle pollution targets, since wildfires already contribute about 10% of UK pollution from as far as Russia and Canada. With researchers warning the foreign-fire burden is likely to grow, cutting domestic emissions from traffic, heating, industry, and agriculture becomes a direct lever to limit the secondary pollution these distant fires generate.
