Kalmar Ottawa Electric T2 EV Enters Service at WTC Group

- WTC Group is putting Kalmar Ottawa T2 EV battery-electric yard trucks to work across its Canadian logistics operations, supported by Transport Canada's iMHZEV (Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles) grant program
- Kalmar Ottawa engineered the T2 EV with a continuous-duty electric drive motor peaking at 454 kW (~610 hp) and a modular lithium-ion battery pack offered in 105, 140, or 210 kWh configurations
- The T2 EV can be spec'd for up to 195,000 lbs. GCWR, matching the heavy-duty hauling capacity of the diesel T2 that has been a fixture at ports for years
- Brad Gordon, WTC's Director of Maintenance, framed the electric investment as a response to growing customer demand for sustainable logistics solutions and a step toward better operational efficiency
- Kalmar invented the specialized terminal tractor concept in 1943, and Zero Emissions Vehicle Sales Manager James Leibold said the T2 EV was developed specifically to match the diesel T2's reputation
Why it matters: Canadian fleets have long cited a gap between diesel and electric yard-truck capability. The T2 EV's 195,000-lb GCWR option and 105–210 kWh battery pack close that gap, while Transport Canada's iMHZEV grant lets operators like WTC Group deploy them without absorbing full upfront cost — making port-side terminal tractors a realistic near-term electrification target.
