- 9 Light Entertainment is launching a sales and distribution arm handling Canadian and international sales, with comedic thriller "Sound & Fury" as its inaugural title.
- "Sound & Fury" is scheduled to go into production this fall and marks the directorial feature debut of SXSW short film regular Charles Wahl, who also wrote the script.
- The cast features Canadian Screen Award winner Daniel Maslany (Murdoch Mysteries), Shaun Majumder, and Kaelen Ohm, with Maslany starring as divorced theatre director Gavin Tremblay, whose revenge on an influencer who humiliates him online goes sideways.
- "Sound & Fury" is lead produced by Gharrett Patrick Paon, whose previous producing credit was 2021's Mi'kmaw heritage coming-of-age film Wildhood.
- Toronto-based 9 Light, founded by Pasha Patriki in 2015, has roughly a dozen feature films already on Crave, Tubi, Shudder, and Netflix, and in theatres internationally; in 2017 it partnered with Raven Banner Entertainment to launch genre label Hangar 18 Media.
- Patriki framed the move as a deliberate break from convention, saying the company plans to back titles "not because they're this year's hot-selling genre, but because they're films we'd actually want to watch."
Why it matters: The launch gives founder Pasha Patriki's mid-sized Toronto company direct control over Canadian and international sales on a catalog of about a dozen features already streaming on Crave, Tubi, Shudder, and Netflix, starting with a social-media-virality thriller that fits his stated taste-first mandate rather than chasing current market trends.
