- Hendra virus emerged in September 1994 when a pregnant mare named Drama Series died in a Brisbane suburb stable, followed by seven more thoroughbreds within 12 hours showing fever, facial swelling, respiratory distress and bloody froth from the nostrils and mouth.
- Vic Rail, the horse trainer who treated Drama Series in her final hours, died after a week in intensive care with organ failure and fluid-filled lungs — confirmed to carry the same novel virus, named Hendra, a morbillivirus previously unknown to science.
- In October 1995, Mark Preston in Mackay — about 1,000 km from Brisbane — died of matching symptoms; retested serum showed Hendra antibodies in Preston and his horses, including a sample drawn a year earlier during unexplained seizures.
- Antibodies for Hendra were found in black flying foxes in April 1996, then within weeks in three other flying fox species; archival samples revealed the virus had circulated in eastern Australian bats for at least a decade before spillover.
- Wildlife ecologist Hume Field, recruited in his mid-30s to the host-hunt, helped establish bats as the natural reservoir and later told the author: "Disease emergence is all about increased opportunity for contact... human impact on the natural system."
- Horses act as amplifying hosts — the virus replicates with extraordinary abundance in them before jumping to humans, which researchers said explains why horse trainers fell ill while wildlife carers handling bats directly did not.
- In 2011, an unprecedented 18 distinct spillovers more than doubled all known Hendra incidents, prompting the unusual government decision to add bat ecologist Peggy Eby from Griffith University to health teams deployed to every infection site.
