- Casey Sherman has partnered with Midnight Lute Productions on 'Vegas Strong,' a book and feature film chronicling the October 1, 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas — the worst mass shooting in American history.
- The project mirrors Sherman's 'Boston Strong,' co-authored with Dave Wedge and adapted into the 2016 film 'Patriots Day' starring Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Bacon, focusing on survivors, first responders, and families rather than the gunman.
- The book will devote several chapters to the Vegas Golden Knights' inaugural-season run to the Stanley Cup Final, which Sherman compared to 'We Are Marshall' for how the expansion team rallied a grieving city.
- Midnight Lute producer Trent Othick, a Las Vegas local, has family and friends directly affected by the October 1 shooting, and helped Sherman organize a 2018 healing cruise in Germany for more than 40 survivors and victims' family members.
- Midnight Lute is led by Othick, ESPN/Fox analyst Matt Muehlebach, former Fox Sports Productions president John Entz, and several ex-pro athletes, backed by Las Vegas-based LJM Associates and Arizona investors Jim Berwick, Josh Snider, Timothy Snider, and Jeff Brack.
- The project is timed to the Golden Knights' 10th season, with plans to weave the team's story with survivor and first-responder accounts into a feature film, per Midnight Lute.
- Sherman has authored 20 books including 'The Finest Hours' (adapted into a 2016 Disney film with Chris Pine and Casey Affleck) and is currently executive producing Hulu's 'Hunting Whitey,' narrated by Ben Affleck.
Why it matters: Sherman already proved the 'Boston Strong'-to-screen playbook with 'Patriots Day,' and this is his highest-profile tragedy-adjacent project since. For Midnight Lute — a Las Vegas-rooted outfit with a producer whose own family was touched by October 1 — 'Vegas Strong' doubles as a locally significant debut tentpole timed to the Golden Knights' 10th season.
