- Microplastic surfaces form "plastispheres" harboring antibiotic-resistant genes at higher levels than surrounding soil, with pesticides appearing to amplify this effect further in the project's findings.
- Biodegradable plastics are not automatically safer — the project found they can still fragment into microplastics in soil and act as vectors for agrochemicals, undermining the industry's green pitch, said Dr Esperanza Huerta Lwanga of Wageningen University.
- Higher microplastic concentrations reduced leaf area, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency and biomass in lettuce, with drought stress compounding the damage beyond what either stressor caused alone.
- A Swiss field study found that plots with the highest tyre-wear particle levels also showed the highest concentrations of other toxic chemicals and metals.
