- Ford opened preorder invites for the Fathom EV pickup, priced from $28,350 for the standard range battery and under $30,000 with the $1,595 destination fee — about half the F-150 Lightning's starting price.
- Fathom is the first model on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform and uses cobalt- and nickel-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that form the vehicle floor, which Ford says lowers the center of gravity and frees up interior space.
- Ford claims the Fathom will offer more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4 (excluding frunk and bed) and a lower total cost to own over five years than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y.
- Fathom standard features include a large touchscreen with Apple Maps natively integrated, Digital Key, Ford app remote control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BlueCruise hands-free highway driving, and bidirectional charging.
- Ford is targeting a 0–60 mph time as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost and has confirmed the truck will carry an NACS port after test mules were spotted at Tesla Superchargers.
- Ford plans to begin production at its 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027, with official preorders opening in early 2027 and deliveries later that year.
- CEO Jim Farley told the 2026 Automotive News Congress that launching the Fathom at scale, on cost, and on time will be "a heck of an effort," though a Ford spokesperson confirmed the 2027 launch timeline is unchanged.
Why it matters: Ford is betting that a sub-$30,000 LFP-powered midsize pickup can win budget-conscious truck buyers from gas models and used Tesla Model Ys — but CEO Jim Farley has publicly flagged the 2027 Louisville Assembly Plant ramp as a stretch, making execution the make-or-break variable for whether the Fathom resets Ford's first-generation EV struggles.
