Jackfruit Latex Gel Regenerates Bone in Gum Disease

- Researchers at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo in Sorocaba created a mucoadhesive biomaterial from jackfruit latex, pomegranate peel extract, and the anti-inflammatory drug simvastatin to treat periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that destroys the structures holding teeth in place.
- The biomaterial was tested on human adipose-derived stem cells at simvastatin concentrations of 0.3%, 0.6%, and 1.2% — all three promoted osteoinduction (bone-forming cell growth) within 14 days, with a stronger effect after 21 days.
- Jackfruit latex provides adhesive properties that could keep the material at the disease site longer, potentially reducing reliance on systemic antibiotics, said study coordinator Professor Eliana Aparecida de Rezende Duek of the Department of Surgery at PUC-SP's Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
- Topical simvastatin sidesteps a key problem with oral dosing, where the liver retains most of the drug and higher doses carry a risk of acute muscle degeneration.
- Professor Duek called the early results "very encouraging" but cautioned that additional research is needed before the technology can move toward clinical use.
- The study was published in the journal Polymer Bulletin and supported by FAPESP (projects 23/17083-8 and 23/12039-0).
Why it matters: Current periodontitis treatments control infection but rarely regenerate the bone and tissue that the disease destroys, and alternatives like guided tissue regeneration and bone grafting produce inconsistent results. If this jackfruit-pomegranate-simvastatin gel proves safe and effective in humans, it could give dentists a locally-delivered option for rebuilding periodontal bone using cheap, plant-derived materials — while avoiding the dose-limiting side effects that have constrained oral simvastatin use.
