Omega-3 and aspirin match antibiotics in gum disease trial

- Researchers from Harvard, USP, Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, Guarulhos University, and the University of Taubaté ran a year-long, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of 109 severe periodontitis patients, published in the Journal of Periodontology.
- Omega-3 plus low-dose aspirin achieved a 57.7% success rate at reaching ≤4 deep periodontal pockets — virtually identical to the 58% rate for metronidazole and amoxicillin, and more than double the 23.1% rate for placebo plus scaling.
- Combining antibiotics with omega-3 and aspirin produced no additional benefit over either treatment alone, the researchers reported.
- First author Nídia Cristina Castro dos Santos of Einstein noted that benefits from the omega-3 and aspirin regimen persisted six months after supplementation ended.
- Lead author Magda Feres (Harvard School of Dental Medicine) said the results offer a real alternative for patients with antibiotic allergies or intolerance and could help curb antibiotic overuse amid rising resistance.
