- BYD's Sealion 08 secured over 12,000 orders within 24 hours of going on sale on September 2, per Zhang Zhou, head of sales at BYD's Ocean division.
- The Sealion 08 starts at 229,900 yuan (~$34,000), with the EV version at 239,900 yuan (~$35,500), available in five- or six-seat configurations with RWD or AWD powertrains.
- All Sealion 08 variants ship with BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging, which the company says fills the battery from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes.
- The EV variant uses a 115.072 kWh battery delivering up to 900 km (CLTC) range in RWD or 800 km in AWD; the PHEV pairs a 55.843 kWh battery with up to 400 km of pure-electric range and 1,650 km combined.
- The interior packs a 17.3" floating infotainment screen, a 12.3" instrument cluster, a 26" AR head-up display, a 21.4" drop-down rear entertainment screen, zero-gravity seats, a built-in refrigerator, and a 25-speaker Devialet sound system.
- The Sealion 08 launch follows BYD's Dynasty-line Great Tang flagship SUV, which secured 30,000 orders in 24 hours and surpassed 100,000 within two weeks; BYD sold 11,010 Great Tang SUVs last month for a cumulative 27,212 since mid-June.
- BYD is extending the premium push overseas by launching its luxury sub-brand Denza in Europe, the UK, and other markets, even as the brand remains best known for low-priced EVs like the Seagull.
Why it matters: Two back-to-back BYD flagship SUV launches — Great Tang and Sealion 08 — each clearing tens of thousands of orders within a day show Chinese buyers absorbing domestic EVs at $34,000+ price points once reserved for foreign luxury brands. The claimed 9-minute, 10%–97% charge and 900 km range target the two remaining EV adoption headwinds directly.
