Ford’s $30,000 EV pickup is getting closer — You may even see one out in the wild

- Ford CFO Sherry House confirmed at the UBS Auto and Auto Tech Conference on June 3 that prototypes of the $30,000 midsize EV pickup are being built and tested ahead of the 2027 launch.
- Ford spokesperson Dave Tovar told the Detroit Free Press that prototypes are "out in the wild" and will begin public road testing in Michigan within the next few weeks.
- The pickup will be the first vehicle on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which uses megcasting to cut parts from 146 in the current Maverick to just two.
- Ford claims the midsize EV pickup has 15% better aerodynamic efficiency than any other pickup truck on the market, with over half of its aerodynamics team recruited from Formula 1.
- Ford will be the first US automaker to use prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which the company says will lower costs and free up interior space.
- Production will begin at Ford's Louisville Assembly plant in 2027, with CEO Jim Farley saying the truck is "affordable to the point that it's not just competing against EVs, it's also competing against gas-powered vehicles as well."
- Ford's US EV sales have fallen over 58% through May 2026, with just 12,284 EVs sold compared to more than 34,100 in the same period a year earlier.
Why it matters: Ford's EV business has cratered 58% year-over-year through May 2026 (12,284 vs. 34,100 units), so the 2027 midsize pickup is effectively the company's bet that a $30,000 price point, megcast manufacturing, and LFP batteries can pull it back into the affordable EV market against the Chevy Bolt, Nissan LEAF, and Tesla Model Y.
